Automatic Mother Baby Recycling Line

An automatic mother baby recycling line is a two-stage extrusion system designed for highly contaminated, high-moisture plastic waste. The vented “mother” extruder performs intensive melting, filtration, and vacuum degassing; the “baby” extruder stabilizes the melt and pelletizes for consistent granule quality. With continuous screen changing, force-feeding, and automated dosing, these lines deliver steady output, lower odour, and improved kWh/kg in demanding Indian recycling operations.

Working Principle and Process Flow

Material is conveyed from shredder/wash to an agglomerator or force-feeder that densifies fluffy film. The mother extruder melts, filters through multi-layer screens, and applies deep-vacuum venting to remove inks, moisture, and volatiles. Melt then transfers to the baby extruder for pressure stabilization and fine filtration before die-face cutting and centrifugal drying. Recipe-based PLC control synchronizes feeders, heaters, and pelletizer RPM to maintain target MFI and throughput.

Configurations Available

  • Film-focused twin-stage lines with force-feeders for LDPE/LLDPE carry bags, stretch wrap, and agricultural mulch film.
  • Universal twin-stage systems for mixed post-consumer streams (labelled HDPE, PP, and printed laminates) with intensive filtration.
  • PET flakes to pellet systems with crystallizer, vented mother extruder, and controlled IV loss for downstream fiber/strap.
  • Odour-control packages using high-vacuum, devolatilization, and optimized residence time for deodorized rPE/rPP pellets.
  • High-output models with double-station screen changers and automatic pressure control for continuous production.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Mother–baby twin extruders with multi-zone heating, nitrided/bi-metallic barrels, and wear-resistant screws for long life.
  • Deep-vacuum degassing (single or double vent) to remove moisture, inks, and odours; measurable improvement in melt stability.
  • Automatic hydraulic screen changers with pressure transducers; screen life and ΔP trends logged for QA.
  • Die-face hot-cut pelletizer with water-ring or air-cool options; precise pellet size distribution for smooth downstream use.
  • Energy-efficient drives with VFDs; documented kWh/kg benchmarks, soft-start, and standby heat management.

Applications and Suitable Materials

  • LDPE/LLDPE films, shopping bags, and stretch wrap after washing and densification for flexible packaging converters.
  • HDPE/PP rigid regrind from drums, caps, crates, and household articles blended to target specific MFI ranges.
  • Printed laminates and mixed PCR streams where deep degassing and tight filtration reduce gels and black specks.
  • PET flakes for fiber/strapping where IV stability and moisture control are critical to downstream tensile performance.

Benefits of an Automatic Mother Baby Line

  • Higher pellet quality: lower moisture, reduced odour, improved colour and melt homogeneity for fewer rejections.
  • Stable production: continuous screen change and pressure control minimize downtime and maintain rated throughput.
  • Lower operating cost: efficient drives, heat management, and optimized screw profiles reduce specific energy consumption.
  • Process flexibility: handles variable contamination and flake densities with recipe-based control and modular add-ons.

Maintenance and Safety Tips

  • Track melt pressure, vacuum level, and motor load; investigate deviations to prevent screw/barrel wear and gel formation.
  • Service screen changer seals and heaters per schedule; keep spare breaker plates, screens, and thermocouples ready.
  • Maintain water quality in the pelletizing loop; check pump flow, cutter alignment, and dryer balance for uniform pellets.
  • Inspect vent ports and vacuum pumps; clean condensate traps to retain effective devolatilization.
  • Follow lockout-tagout and hot-surface protocol; train operators on start-up, purge, and emergency stop procedures.

FAQs – Automatic Mother Baby Recycling Line

1. When should I choose a mother baby line instead of a single-stage extruder? +
Select twin-stage when input has high moisture/ink/volatile load, or when tight pellet quality is required at steady throughput. The first stage focuses on filtration and degassing; the second stabilizes the melt and pelletizes efficiently.
2. What filtration level is recommended for printed films and mixed PCR? +
Start with 80–120 mesh and adjust based on gel specs and downstream die size. Use differential pressure trends to schedule changes; auto screen changers prevent pressure spikes during swaps.
3. How do I control odour in pellets? +
Combine hot washing, adequate drying, deep-vacuum vents, and optimized residence time. Keep vent ports clean, ensure leak-free vacuum lines, and monitor VOC reduction during trial runs.
4. Which pelletizing option is better: water-ring or air-cool? +
Water-ring suits high-output film grades with good surface finish; air-cool reduces water handling for some PP/HDPE grades. Choose based on target pellet properties, utilities, and maintenance preference.
5. What utilities are typical for a 400–800 kg/hr line? +
Expect three-phase power, chilled/cooling water, and compressed air. Provide stable water quality for pelletizing, and consider water recycling and ETP integration for sustainable operation.
