Dana Cutter Machine
Dana Cutter Machine
A Dana Cutter Machine converts continuous polymer strands from the extruder into uniform plastic granules (dana). Built for PP, PE, HDPE, LDPE, HIPS, ABS and more, it ensures consistent pellet size, smooth edges, and minimal dust—improving downstream packing, compounding, and molding efficiency. Choose models that match your throughput (kg/hr), strand count, MFI range, and cooling method for reliable, low-cost production.
Working Principle and Process Flow of Dana Cutting
After filtration, molten polymer exits the die head as strands. These are cooled via water bath/air, surface-dried, and pulled by a nip/haul-off. The Dana Cutter’s rotating blades cut strands into preset lengths. Pellet size is set by blade speed vs. line speed; hardened tool steel blades and precise gap settings keep cuts clean. For soft or sticky polymers, strand conditioning and correct bath temperature prevent sticking and tails.
Types of Dana Cutter Machines
- Strand Pelletizer (Dry Face): Standard for PP/PE/ABS. Water-bath cooled strands are cut by rotary knives against a bed knife.
- Hot Face Cutter (Die Face): Pellets cut at the die; used for high-MFI films or sticky materials needing immediate cut and fluid conveying.
- Underwater Pelletizer: Premium solution for tight size distribution and high throughput; pellets formed and carried in process water.
- Inline Compact Units: Integrated haul-off + cutter for space-constrained lines and quick product changeovers.
- Heavy-Duty Pelletizers: Designed for thick multi-strand outputs, reinforced bearings, wider feed, and higher torque drives.
Key Features and Specifications
- Variable frequency drive (VFD) for precise RPM control and stable pellet length across material viscosity changes.
- Hardened HSS/TCT rotary & bed knives with quick-setting jigs; easy sharpening and repeatable blade gap.
- Adjustable nip pressure, knurled haul-off rollers, and anti-slip guides for consistent strand traction.
- Low-dust housing with sound insulation, safety guards, and interlocks for safe, quiet operation.
- Stainless contact parts in wet zones; corrosion-resistant water bath with overflow/filtration options.
Applications of Dana Cutter Machines
- Recycling lines producing reprocessed PP/PE/HDPE/LDPE granules for film, sheet, pipe, and injection-molded items.
- Masterbatch & compounding where tight pellet size supports accurate dosing and color/additive consistency.
- Job-work pelletizing for mixed post-consumer and industrial waste with variable MFI and strand stability.
- In-house scrap recovery in packaging, blow molding, and extrusion plants for cost reduction and sustainability.
Benefits of a Quality Dana Cutter
- Uniform pellet size → better flowability, dosing accuracy, and packing density.
- Lower dust/fines → reduced filter clogging and improved downstream surface finish.
- Fast changeovers → recipe-based RPM, tool-less covers, and quick blade swaps minimize downtime.
- Lower operating cost → efficient motors, long-life knives, and standardized spares.

Maintenance and Safety Tips
- Inspect knife edges daily; maintain prescribed blade gap and swap/surface-grind when burrs appear.
- Align haul-off rollers; clean polymer build-up on guards, guides, and chute to prevent jamming.
- Check VFD parameters, bearings, and vibrations; lubricate per schedule and log anomalies.
- Stabilize strand cooling—monitor bath temperature and dryer to avoid tails and fused pellets.
- Follow lockout–tagout; use safety interlocks, shields, cut-resistant gloves, and eye protection.
